Success Story - LSBU Green Skills Hub Case Study!

Kelvin was referred to Elevate Everywhere for work experience by Rebecca at the LSBU Green Skills Hub and completed one week’s work experience with them.
What course/ job did you enroll on with the Hub and how has it contributed to your development as an individual?
I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to work at Elevate Everywhere for a week following my completion of an Engineering BTEC. Elevate Everywhere specialise in district heat networks and building service engineering. They help clients such as companies, councils and other bodies by analysing their existing carbon footprint and energy usage, then design and deliver solutions to achieve their environmental and cost saving goals, such as decarbonising to achieve net-zero targets.
The placement took place at their offices in central London. It was well organised, with a work/meeting schedule provided for the week via the calendar option on Teams. Each day was something different, being divided into various meetings, working shadowing and software study sessions.
The placement provided an overview of each stage of the business, from analysis, design, build and maintenance. I was able to work shadow multiple electrical and mechanical engineers to see and understand what projects they had and were currently working on.
Everyone I spoke and worked with was incredibly friendly, accommodating and happy to help and answer any questions.
I worked with the Analyse (RIBA stage 0-2) and Design team (RIBA stages 2-5+) both in person and via teams meetings. I was shown what software is used in the industry (including AutoCAD, Revit, Hysopt and IES SketchUp plug-in) and given the chance to practise using some of the software.
If you could give one piece of advice to other residents, what would it be?
I would urge and recommend engineering students who have a keen interest in the environment to undertake a placement at Elevate Everywhere.
You will gain valuable experience working in a sector that will continue to grow as we transition to a low carbon economy. It will also allow you to make connections with engineering professionals and allow you to put your studies to practical use.
Here is what Elevate Everywhere had to say about Kelvin’s time with them:
We at Elevate loved hosting Kelvin as a work placement. What stood out to us was his eagerness to learn; he asked insightful questions and responded well to the various tasks we gave him. He had the opportunity to interact with different members of our mechanical, electrical, and sustainability engineering teams and displayed equal enthusiasm for all fields. We usually ask our placements to do a presentation about decarbonisation at the end of the week, and his presentation was really well-researched and demonstrated how much knowledge he had picked up in one short week.
We had a great experience with South Bank College and would love to accept more students for work placements in the future. Our contact was very responsive, which helped us organise the placement programme more easily.
